Neuquen
Neuquén
province has an area of 94,078 km2. The major cities are Neuquén
(capital), Zapala, Chos Malal, Alumine, San Martín de los Andes,
Cutral Có. The provinces of Río Negro bound the province of Neuquén on
the East and South, Mendoza on the North and Chile on the West.

SAN MARTIN DE LOS ANDES
city
is located in the southwest of Neuquén province, beside the incredible
Lacar lake. The city founded in 1898, is nowadays a well-known
international tourist center.
It has a local population of around 30,000 inhabitants.
The city surrounded by the Lanín National Park, got its name from the
volcano of the same name.
From
the center of the city and 20 Km to the east, you can find the
Chapelco Skiing Center. To the south, and following the Seven Lakes
route, you can go through one of the most beautiful and interesting
places, that nature has. You can enjoy the different contrasts of
green covered mountains, deep blue water lakes, strong current rivers,
and high water falls. Coming towards last section of the route you
will enter the Nahuel Huapi National Park and Villa la Angostura town.
Both situated on the shores of the 560 km2 Nahuel Huapi lake.
LANIN VOLCANO
is
located in the south-west region of Neuquén province, between the
Paimún and Tromen lakes. It is surrounded by the National Park of the
same name. It is a Mapuche (the natives of this region) word, meaning,
"We sink in ash". It is a challenge to both local and foreign climbers,
its hazardous steep north and south slopes is usually covered by a
blanket of ice and even snow, depending on the season. Its slopes are
covered by Pehuen´s (araucaria) forests; trees that can reach more
than 70 m, and that just grow 4 cm per year. Although extinguished,
geologically, Lanín is one of the youngest volcanoes of the Andes, and
one of the most beautiful mountains of the world.
VALLEY OF THE DINOSAURS
is
located in the southeast of Neuquén province. This is the place where
Ruben Carolini in 1993 discovered the fossil of the Giganotosaurus
Carolinii (14.5 m and 10 tons), the biggest carnivorous dinosaur ever
found in the world. Here Lieto Tessone also found the Rebbachisaurus
Tessonei in 1988, and just 50 Km away from here the Argentinosaurus
Huinculensis was discovered, the biggest dinosaurs ever found in the
world. One hundred millions years ago, this area was covered by jungle.
A museum is the main attraction of the village "Villa El Chocón",
where it its possible to see the fossilized rest of the Giganotosaurus
Carolinii. It is a perfect place to participate in various activities
like fishing, swimming, sailing, camping, or just visit the dinosaur
museum, or visit the million year old dinosaurs footprints on the
coast. The UN has declared the region of interest in 1996 and as a
national monument in 1997.
LIMAY RIVER
starts
at the bottom of the Andes Mountains, in the Nahuel Huapi lake. On its
380 km., course to the Atlantic Ocean five dams were constructed,
Alicura, Piedra del Águila, Pichi Picún Leufu, Chocón, and Arroyito.
These five power stations produce a high percent of the electricity of
the country. It is a river of clear blue waters where everyone can
enjoy swimming, fishing, sailing, or camping on its coast. Beside the
380 km. river, you will find different landscapes like the Magic
Valley, the Amphitheater, or the Valley of the Dinosaurs. In the
eastern region of Neuquén province, it meets the Neuquén river and
together they continue their course to the ocean as the Rio Negro.
CAVIAHUE
is
located in the northwest of Neuquén province, beside the multi-colored
lake of the same name. During winter, the mountain, and the pehuen´s
forests, which surround the place, is covered with snow. The
combination of rare trees, the basaltic soil, and the amazing color or
the lake make it a unique place to explore.
COPAHUE
is
located fifteen km from Caviahue, at the foot of Copahue volcano.This
is a volcanic region and Copahue Termas enclosed in a gigantic
amphitheatre formed between mountain walls, with an opening to the
east, is a well-known area due to its thermal baths, which are open
from November until the first snow. Copahue receives tourists who come
to enjoy its sulfurous natural water, believed to have healing
properties.
LAGUNA BLANCA NATIONAL PARK
is
located in the northwest of Neuquén province. It has an area of 1.700
hectares. It declared a National Park in 1940 in order to protect the
black neck swan. Parque Nacional Laguna Blanca (Laguna Blanca National
Park) protects the Laguna Blanca, one of the most important lakes of
the Patagonic steppe that house different forms of aquatic life. The
protected area belongs to the patagonic steppe eco-region. Abrupt
walls surround it. The Laguna Blanca is located 1.270 meters above sea
level. It has a 10 meter depth and receives water from two brooks, the
“Llano Blanco” and the”Pichi-Ñireco”.
NAHUEL HUAPI NATIONAL PARK
(nahuel
- tiger huapi – island in native Mapuche language) is located in the
south-west of Neuquén province and north-west of Río Negro, between
the Patagonia plateau and the Andes. It has an area of more than 7,500
sq km. with many rivers and lakes, like, Gutiérrez, Mascardi, Hess,
Fonk, Martín and Nahuel Huapi (the largest and the most important).
Nahuel Huapi is in the middle of the park and covers an area of 560 sq
km.; its maximum depth is in the Blest zone with 464 m. The high
mountains are the natural border between Argentina and Chile, where
you will find Mount Tronador (3554 m) is the highest. The others with
considerable importance are Mount Catedral (2388) and Bayo (1750).
Both of them developed as skiing resorts.The National Park covers
different types of landscapes rich in plants and fauna from the arid
Patagonia plateau, hard shrubs and guanacos, ñandues, and the
Patagonian hare, to the Valdivian jungle and the sub-artic forest with
its amazing vegetation , Cohiues, lengas, and arrayanes and, in the
west, the local fauna like the huemul, puma, pudú, and the great
condor. On the south coast of Nahuel Huapi, lake is San Carlos de
Bariloche, a busy commercial city, built in mountain style
architecture. On the other side of the lake is Villa la Angostura, a
beautiful mountain village.
THE ARRAYANES NATIONAL PARK
is
located in the south-west of Neuquén province, in the Quetrihue
peninsula on the Nahuel Haupi lake coast. This is the only Arrayanes
forest in the world, and the only Argentinean national park with-in
another (surrounded by the Nahuel Huapi National Park). It is a forest
formation unique in the world with century old specimens. The trees
barks are cold, smooth and of cinnamon color. There are white flowers
and purple fruits of a pleasant taste. According to legend the small
log cabin built in the middle of the forest and the small sized deer
(Pudú-Pudú), living in the area, were the inspiring muse for the
famous Walt Disney’s film "Bambi".
