Rio Negro

Rio Negro province has a surface of 203,013 km2 and it is
bounded by the provinces of Neuquén on the West, Chubut on the South,
La Pampa on the North and Buenos Aires, on the east. A region that
extends from the Atlantic to the Andes. In the east, it has extended
beaches that cover the coast, in the north the Rio Negro Valley, which
produces the best apples in the world and in the center of the
province there is the desert, while in the west you will find forests
and lakes. The most important cities are San Carlos de Bariloche on
the west, Cipolleti, General Roca and Viedma its capital, all of them
beside the Rio Negro river. Other important cities are, Villa Regina,
Allen, San Antonio Oeste, Río Colorado.
An
irrigation system was build several years ago, from the Rio Negro
river to supply water for farming specially orchards that cover the
Rio Negro Valley, being this the main economic region of the province.
The climate is very cold in winter and very warm in summer. In the
eastern and center regions, the climate is dry, since there is little
rain and strong dry winds.
The western zone is more humid, this region gets the most rain in the
country through the year. In the central region, rains do not exceed
200 mm, and in the coast, it fluctuates between 200 and 300 mm annual.
Places to Visit:
The beauty and variety of its natural landscapes, makes tourism an
important source of income for Rio Negro. The main attraction is the
lakes region, where San Carlos de Bariloche stands out. Another
tourist center is the summer resort Las Grutas with the warmest waters
on the Argentine coast.
Nahuel
Huapi National Park, Mapuche voice, nahuel (tiger) huapi (island)
is located in the southwest of Neuquén province and northwest of Rio
Negro. It is between the Patagonia plateau and the Andes. It has an
area of more than 7,500 km2. with many rivers and lakes like,
Gutiérrez, Mascardi, Hess, Fonk, Martín and , the biggest and the most
important Nahuel Huapi. It is located in the center of the park and
covers an area of 560 km2; its maximum depth is in the Blest zone with
464 m. The high mountains are the natural border between Argentina and
Chile, where the Tronador (3554 meters) is the highest, the Catedral
(2388 meters) and the Bayo (1750 meters). The last two are skiing
resorts of international standards.
The National Park covers different landscapes rich in plants and
animals. From the arid Patagonia plateau, with its hard shrubs and
guanacos, ñandues (ostrich like bird), and the Patagonian hare. To the
Valdivian jungle and the sub-artic forest with its amazing vegetation
(Cohiues, lengas, arrayanes) and animals (Huemul, puma, pudú, condor,)
in the west.
On the south coast of the Nahuel Huapi lake you will find San Carlos
de Bariloche, build in Swiss style architecture, with many services
for tourists. On the other side of the lake is Villa la Angostura, a
beautiful and typical mountain village.
San Carlos de Bariloche
Located
in the southwest of Rio Negro province, beside the south coast of
Nahuel Haupi lake and surrounded by the national park of the same name.
A city that holds many tourist attractions that makes it one of the
main tourist centers in Argentina. It has all the services for
tourists and more than 20,000 beds.
If you visit Bariloche you will enjoy rafting the Manso river, go
fishing on one of the several lakes (Nahuel Haupí, Mascardi, Hess,
Correntoso, Traful, Escondido) or rivers (Correntoso, Limay) that
cover the region, trekking on the Cerro Lopez even the Tronador
mountain or horseback riding in one of the many ranches within the
national park.
Another appealing attraction is sailing or boating to Chile through
the lakes that connect through the Andes with breath taking views.
If you enjoy good skiing,(the winter season is in July to early
October), the favorite skiing slopes are on Cerro Catedral, but the
biggest skiing resort in the southern hemisphere is the Catedral
Skiing Resort, 16 km from San Carlos de Bariloche.
Las Grutas
Situated
in the southeast of Rio Negro province, on the coast of Golfo Azul,
only 15 Km. from San Antonio Oeste. It is a summer resort with 5,000
inhabitants that can reach 20,000 in summer. Its main attraction is
the white sand beaches, with template and clear water as well local
casino. It is on the San Matías Gulf , with medium sized cliffs, it
has little or no wind at all. From Las Grutas you can travel to Sierra
Grande, and visit the old iron mines, the San Antonio Este harbor,
with beautiful beaches, or San Antonio Oeste with its small fishing
port. You can enjoy water sports, or hire horse and make your own tour
along the beaches. Each February the "Fiesta del Golfo" (Gulf
Festival) takes place with music shows, parties, and the Gulf Queen
pageant.
