TOURIST
SEASON - When to Travel
Remember that in the southern hemisphere the seasons are the opposite
of those in the northern hemisphere. In general, summer with mild
temperatures and long days is the ideal time to visit Patagonia and
the Southern Andes. Wintertime is recommended for traveling to the
North and Northwest as the rains are less frequent and the tropical
temperatures drop a few degrees. Autumn and Spring are marvelous in
Buenos Aires, Cuyo and the pre-mountain range areas of La Rioja and
Catamarca. For Buenos Aires City January (summer) is the most tranquil
month since many residents are on vacation, but the cultural offer is
still abundant and varied.

HOURS
The time zone corresponds to GMT-3 and currently no change is made in
the summer months.
Activity in Buenos Aires starts between eight and nine in the morning
and extends until late at night. This city has lost the habit of
“siesta” (Afternoon nap), which is still the custom in the interior of
the country.
SHOPPING
Shops
are open Monday through Fridays, from 8 am to 7:30 pm, and Saturdays
from 9 am to 1 pm; however, shops located in important avenues are
open on Saturday afternoon. In shopping centers, hours usually extend
until 10 pm, including Saturdays and Sundays. Shopping in Buenos Aires
is an experience. Anything you can get in mayor cities, you can get in
Buenos Aires, and at a fraction of the cost, and there are many local
products, such as leather goods, that you would be hard-pressed to
find anywhere else. Best buys in Argentina include leather, fur, wine,
clothes, and antiques.

$ 5 and $ 2 notes, and 1, 0.50, 0.25, 0.10 and 0.05 cent coins.The U.S.
dollar is the most common foreign currency.Shops accept credit cards
and dollars.
EXCHANGE RATE
The exchange rate in Argentina is convenient for the foreign
tourist. The main banking area is located in the so-called
“micro-Centro”. This area comprises the first five blocks (numbered
100 to 500) of San Martin, Reconquista, 25 de Mayo, Sarmiento,
Presidente Juan Domingo Perón and Mitre streets.U.S. dollars are
accepted in most shops, but it is convenient to exchange them for
pesos in casas de cambio (Exchange Bureau) or banks.
Note: NEVER exchange foreign currency from people offering better
rates on a street corner even when the rate they offer is tempting,
they are “very quick” and you may find yourself losing a lot of money.
TELEPHONE
Public
telephones work with telephone cards; these are available in kiosks
and telephone companies, or with legal tender coins. There are
telephone call boxes where you can pay in cash (open 24 hours a day).
To call from abroad to Argentina you have to dial the country code 54
and then the area code of the place you want to call. For domestic
calls, you have to dial zero before the area code. For international
calls, you have to dial 00, the country code and then the city code.
Remember that there are reduced tariffs from 10 PM to 08.00 AM.
ELECTRIC POWER
Electric power in Argentina is 220 volt, 50-cycle alternating current.
Power outlets have two cylindrical input holes (European type) or two
flat with one ground connection (Australian Type). It is convenient to
bring an adaptor for these outlets to use your electric devices
without problems.
HEALTH
Vaccination
is neither obligatory nor necessary to visit Buenos Aires since the
city is safe from the sanitary viewpoint, but you should consult your
personal physician as is always wise when you travel to have some
precaution with common deceases in mayor cities. The public water
supply is reliable. You should always buy your food from shops
avoiding street food stands, as they not always follow the strict
hygiene standards that are obligatory. Public hospitals (are available
for tourists) have a 24-hour emergency service, without charge.
Argentine physicians are considered excellent professionals worldwide.
You may also consider before starting your trip looking into a health
insurance cover that most credit cards offer, they usually give you a
toll-free number to ring where you can be informed in your native
language which Doctor, Hospital or Clinic you can go to.The ambulance
emergency service (SAME) is also free.

Car Rental in Argentina
Many
car agencies offer a variety of cars for the consumer to choose from.
Most types of driver licenses are sufficient to rent a car, and the
only other important factor is for you to be able to drive a car with
a manual transmission.
Private Car and Driver Service in Argentina
A great alternative to renting a car in Argentina, is hiring a remis,
a private car and driver, which would take you around for about $20
USD an hour. The driver often knows the main attractions you would
want to see and often acts as a private guide. Prices start at about
$20 USD an hour, but often average out to much cheaper rates if hired
